Each February, the Career and Technical Education community celebrates CTE Month® to raise awareness of the role that CTE has in preparing our students for careers and college. Milford School District will be highlighting six of their CTE Majors.
The School of Agriscience offers our students courses of study in Agriculture Structures and Engineering, Greenhouse/Horticulture Science, Animal Science, and Food Science. Students have the opportunities to earn accredited certifications pertaining to their particular courses of study that are applicable on today’s job site. Students are given the opportunity to receive certifications in ServSafe, NCCER (construction industry), and Youth for the Quality Care of Animals. Additionally, students who complete the Animal Science pathway can receive articulated credits through the University of Delaware or Delaware State University.
Students in this pathway are also members of the Milford FFA. The Milford FFA is a Gold Star Chapter with over 415 members. This student organization shares a common mission with the National FFA. We promote leadership skills, personal growth, and career success. The Milford FFA provides opportunities for students to attend State and National conferences, Career Development Events, Leadership Development Events, and prepare our students for 21st century skills within the workforce.

The Milford High School Engineering Pathway is currently in its first year of existence. This pathway is provided by Project Lead the Way and begins with an introductory course in which students learn the foundations of engineering design and apply them to a variety of problems. Students learn to keep an engineering notebook and document every step of the design process. CAD is incorporated in the form of Autodesk Inventor, in which students create virtual representations of their designs that will be transformed into manufacturing drawing sheets and physical prototypes using hands-on woodworking, 3D printing, and laser cutting. Students who successfully complete the course will leave with a completed physical project of their own design. This year’s classes designed working Automata and Puzzle Cubes. Future course levels will incorporate coding, robotics, and more advanced engineering principles.
The PLTW coursework is extremely challenging and intended for students with strong academic skills. As such, Project Lead the way is currently in talks with College Board to allow students to earn Advanced Placement credit in all courses. MHS educators will be working with local engineers to ensure that students are provided with relevant experiences that will prepare them for careers in engineering-related fields.
The School of Business and Finance offers students courses of study in Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Business Management, and Finance. The Marketing and Entrepreneurship program of study at Milford High along with the partnering international student organization, DECA, prepare students to be business leaders and entrepreneurs through instruction/activities in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. This is achieved through classroom instruction, activities; fundraising endeavors via an apparel printing shop as well as the numerous conferences and competitions students may attend providing them with exposure to outside ideas through interacting with business leaders and students from across the country.
The Business Management pathway’s major area of focus is dedicated to performing administrative and managerial processes vital to the success and ongoing existence of a business organization, regardless of the sector or industry. This program of study will build on the skills learned through electronic communications, publishing documents, projects, and active participation in Business Professionals of America (BPA). Students will use Microsoft Office Suite and/or Adobe Creative Cloud software packages to complete a variety of business tasks, such as formatting documents and web-page development. As members of our BPA Chapter, students increase their skills and knowledge by participating in numerous community service and competition events from finance, marketing, management and informational technology. Our chapter has had the pleasure of placing in the state competitions and has competed nationally. Currently we have 80% of our students that are Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certified. Additionally, students that complete this pathway can receive articulated credits from Goldey-Beacom College, Delaware Technical Community College, or Wilmington University.
The Academy of Finance (AOF) major engages students with the world of financial services by focusing on banking and credit, financial planning, accounting, and insurance. Students will also gain career knowledge through a series of work-based learning activities that are conducted in school and outside of the classroom. Students who successfully complete the AOF major can receive articulated credit through Delaware Technical Community College.
The Teacher Academy is a pathway geared towards preparing our aspiring educators with true hands-on and real-life experiences. The foundation course, Human Growth and Development, relates to a child psychology program and then filters into the second-level course, Teaching as a Profession. It is in this course that students examine the various roles and facets of the teaching profession. Several field trips occur where our high school students interact with students in the community from K-12 and from a variety of academic backgrounds. The third-level course, Foundations of Curriculum and Instruction, is where true lesson planning and unit design occurs. Students take the lead in practicing teaching styles and techniques as they embed state-of-the-art technology and proven strategies for effective education.
Seniors in the third level class will sit for the Para Pro Praxis, seizing the opportunity to earn a paraprofessional license and teach in our community. A student internship in a school of their choice is also part of the final curriculum, providing students a chance to implement their learned techniques.
The School of Health Sciences offers courses of study in Allied Health and Public and Community Health pathways. The Allied Health Program of study is an instructional program that engages students in open-ended problem solving where they study topics such as medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology. Through exploration of the National Health Science Standards, students will acquire important skills necessary for healthcare professionals such as medical mathematics, communication, safety practices, legal responsibilities, and teamwork. In addition, students will develop technical skills such as performing a wound culture, measuring vital signs, collecting a throat culture and performing a strep test. The program prepares students for a variety of careers in healthcare such as respiratory therapist, nurse, physical therapist, dental hygienist, and medical lab technician.
The Public & Community Health Program of study engages students in a comprehensive approach to health while learning about social determinants such as poverty, discrimination, and inadequate access to resources. Students learn to view health from medical, behavioral, social, and environmental perspectives. Additionally, we explore the fields of health and human services while investigating client needs, services, and the skills and attitudes required of the effective human services worker. The Public and Community Health Pathway consists of three courses: Fundamentals of Health Science, Public and Community Health and Personal Wellness. This pathway is a great choice for students who want to work in variety of healthcare or public service settings. With successful completion of this pathway, students will have over 50 hours of community experiences and may gain six college credits.
The Digital Design Technology Program of study is geared toward the student who is interested in broadcasting, graphic design, advertising, web design, digital marketing, etc. Students will explore methods of communication, including the operation of video cameras and non-linear editing. Students will develop skills in the use of multi-camera studio productions and the methods of production design. Students will also learn how multimedia can provide multiple avenues for developing concepts and messages. Additionally, students will learn advanced techniques in areas such as design, photo manipulation, and business applications.
